Bill’s Story

We’ve been sharing our girls’ thoughts about our move from VA and life here on the Reservation. You can read the girls’ stories here:
Meet Big Bill!

William Joseph is the only man in our fam – God bless him. He is currently teaching middle school math full-time while running Hidden Springs Mission with me. Here are his thoughts on our move…

Why do you think we moved to the Reservation?

Honestly, since I was 18, I think I always knew I’d end up here. It was something that God placed on my heart 26 years ago and looking back now, I realize it was just a matter of time. We moved to Hidden Springs because we love this community, we love Jesus, and we want to share Him with others. Without a doubt, I believe that this is where we are supposed to be.

What has been the hardest part about moving here?

Definitely being away from family and friends. When you live in one place for 40 years, you develop deep relationships.

What do you miss most about VA?

My mom, Brickhouse Pizza, and the Outer Banks…in that order.

What is the best thing about living here so far?

So much…I love our church, love our community, and love this beautiful land we live in. I love playing basketball with the teens. I love the amazing hikes with friends and family. I love sitting around a fire with new friends and talking about Jesus. I love the kindness we’ve experienced from neighbors near and far. I love our animals (all of them, especially my chickens). I love living for Jesus alongside my wife and kids.

What have you learned about God since we’ve moved?

I have been reminded again and again that He is good, He is patient, and He is faithful. Through all the times – success and failure – I am learning that God is good, and He can be trusted. He has proven it time and time again. God has been so patient with me as I have stumbled, doubted, questioned, and wandered. I have seen what Psalmists often write about: the steadfast love of God – a love that never quits, never gives up, and never ceases. He has been so faithful to me and true to His Word.

What have you learned about yourself since we’ve moved?

I’ve learned how much of my life has been lived based on how I feel in the moment and not trusting in God. These last few years have really brought that out in me. My feelings do not define me, cannot always be trusted, and often take me places I don’t want to be. In our time here, I have experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows – I believe that’s what striving to live for God is like. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I am learning that God really does have my back, I can rest in Him, and I can trust Him in and for EVERYTHING.

If you could say something to the people who give money every month to help the nonprofit, what would it be?

Thank you. We would literally not be able to be here and do the things we do without you. It is very humbling to realize that people love us enough and believe in this mission enough to give every single month. We appreciate you so much – you are amazing.

If you could say something to people who are thinking about giving money to HSM, what would it be?

We know that this is a huge commitment and one we do not take for granted. We are so thankful for those who give and see them as partners with us in this ministry. They allow us to serve in ways and have impact on lives that would be impossible otherwise. We believe that God has placed us here, has big plans for our community, and we would love for you to join us in this mission.

What is a favorite moment, story, or memory you’d like to share from anytime in the past 2.5 years?

Whitewater rafting in Colorado with about 30 teens from our community.
Thanks so much for letting us share with you – we love you guys!
